September is officially over and I’m pumped about what the future holds.

This month was full of positives and negatives, as with most months in any online business.

On a positive note, I was able to sell Website 5 for $42,400.  This is a nice cash stockpile that I can use to grow other sites in my portfolio and continue to expand my business.  I’ll discuss why I decided to sell within this report.

In addition, because of the sale, September was my best earning month for the entire year so far…..sounds good right?!?!?!

But it’s not all positive.

On the negative side, nearly all of my portfolio was impacted by the numerous Google updates from the month and while it isn’t a catastrophic loss, it hurts to see this considering I purposely work in different niches and try to diversify as much as I can.

In addition to that, one of my focus sites seems to have been impacted negatively by a 30% traffic loss which is incredibly frustrating considering this is the SAME site that was already hit, recovered, and is again getting hit by Google.

Google is….testing my patience as of late with all these updates.  Due to them beating up my website portfolio, I’ve had to scale back my expenses until further notice.

This month my total income after expenses was $43,807 which comes out to $1,460 in profit per day.

I should mention before we begin, if you’re looking to start your own blog, make sure you check out my free IGNITION course today.

I’ve also got some random things that I want to get off my chest:

I’ve adjusted these income reports: I want to point out that I’ve adjusted my income reports this month.  While I previously reported an update on every site in my portfolio, moving forward I’m only going to give a detailed report about the sites that are a key focus for my company.  In addition, at the bottom of my report I’ve posed a question for all of you to answer.  As an FYI, I read and respond to EVERY comment on my site as well, so I’d love if you gave me your thoughts.

Google is being very uncooperative as of late:  Never in my career have I dealt with a situation where Google has negatively impacted every site that I own in a short amount of time.  Sure, there’s often been one or two sites that were impacted by updates, whether positively or negatively, but never the entire portfolio.  This changed in September and overall, in the last two updates most of my sites have been hit.  While I’m not about to close my online business, I’m very frustrated by this.  Search engines are never necessarily reliable, but it seems very odd to me that all my sites are being impacted when they are in very different niches.  This situation has made me think hard about my business model.

Back to Diversifying:  Earlier this year, I mentioned how I wanted to reduce my portfolio size down to 4-5 sites to consolidate my attention and focus.  I don’t know who didn’t like that over at Google, but it seems like the more I try to do this, the more I am held back by unpredictable algorithm updates that seem to be randomly impacting sites.

It’s made me question my affinity to focusing on a small portfolio of sites.  While I would love to do this, I feel like doing so is too risky with how unpredictable Google has been as of late.  So, even though I don’t really want to, I’m going to be focused on growing current sites while simultaneously launching new sites in different niches to spread my risk across additional projects.

One positive here is that I have become a better business owner/manager in the last year and tightened up my processes to the point where I can see everything in Trello at the click of a button and I have all of the right staff in place to help me meet my organizational goals.

Personal Life Update

On a personal level, September was boring.

I really don’t have a lot to report for the month other than the fact that it was my 39th birthday.  I’d love to tell you that my wife and I did something really cool and out of the ordinary to celebrate, but it was as simple as going out to an aquarium and watching Saara’s reaction to all of the different animals.

But hey, seeing her smile made my day.

Other than that, my health issues are subsiding, and I’ve been taking better care of myself.

I’ve also gotten deeper into personal finance as of late.

One small achievement that I think is worth mentioning is that I finally paid off all of my student loans!

I had been waiting for years to hear if the government was going to forgive my loans, but after the president had explained the forgiveness plan, I realized I wouldn’t qualify due to my income, so I decided to pay them off fully.  In total it was $27k in debt being erased and now I no longer have to worry about those stupid loans.

Do I regret getting them?  Yes and no.  I always looked at an education as a great insurance plan in case entrepreneurship didn’t work out.  Thankfully, I’m blessed enough to where it did work out and I can always fall back on my MBA if needed.

Currently, the only debt that my wife and I have left is our mortgage and the solar panels that are on the house.  My debt with the solar panels is $18k, so I’d like to get rid of that, but it’s only a $100 payment per month and it’s hard to justify paying that off as the interest rate is so low.

Our mortgage is substantially more at $523k, but one thing that I’ve been doing is paying $4k/month even though I only owe about $2.8k/month.  This will make it so that instead of my loan taking 30 years to pay off, it’ll be about 14 years.

I may end up throwing more cash at it when I have a big website sale as well, but for now, this is the plan.

That’s all for the personal update.

If this is your first time on my website let me explain a few things about my detailed income reports each month that outlines the money I made (or lost) each month.

I’m doing this for a number of reasons:

1) I strive to be transparent about what it takes to make money online.

2) These reports help me keep track of my own progress.

3) These reports hold me accountable.

Keep in mind, I don’t create these to gloat about my earnings. I create them to help you understand the true “earning curve” of online business.

On a side note, I don’t disclose my actual website URL’s on my reports because I’ve had bad experiences with copycats in the past.

So, in my income reports, you’ll see website generalizations like Website 1, Website 3, Website 5 Website 4, etc.

If you’re looking to create your own blog/online business and want to get started quickly, I suggest you sign up for my FREE course, IGNITION, by clicking here.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s dive into the report.

Project Updates

Udemy Update

I don’t focus on Udemy any longer, but I have made money from them every month since I stopped.

OHP Website

It was neither a good nor bad month for OHP.  Traffic remained stagnant and earnings fell a little bit.  I’ve been a little frustrated with the site as of late because I’m losing some of my most profitable keywords for the site.  I’m not sure exactly why this is, but I’ve been spending time trying to revise my content to make it better to combat this.

The thing is, this isn’t easy to do because much of the content on the site is focused on software and frankly, software isn’t changing that quickly.  So, I’m in this weird guessing game with Google as I continually make updates and then look at how Google reacts to those updates over time.

  • Pageviews decreased MoM by 2% to 56k
  • This month I earned: $8,472. Earnings decreased MoM by 7%.
  • EPM decreased MoM to $151.36

PLAN:  Due to the recent algorithm updates and noticing a downward trend in income, I’m having to reduce my content output on the OHP site.  I’m not entirely sure if I’ll be able to continue to create content at the pace that I was before, but I do believe that optimizing my current content would serve me best as that has a better chance of increasing my revenue.

So, over the next couple of months, I’m going to try to continuously revise content and see if I can increase the rankings in the SERP.

My overall goal is to increase the time on page for anything that I revise to give users exactly what they’re looking for.  My thought is that if the time on page increases, I’ll be able to signal to Google that my page is well written and gives the user the answer that they’re looking for.

While this all makes sense to me in theory, in practice I’ve seen some very weird results so far.  Below is a screenshot of the analytics for one of the revised pages on my site.

Now, as you can see after my revisions, I was able to increase the time on page by 74% to make the average duration time over 10 minutes, which is a BIG boost and I’d think would be a huge positive in the eyes of Google.  I’ve also decreased my bounce rate and exit percentage of the same users.

These are all very positive things that you’d think would make Google happy.

But, as you can see in the screenshot, my page views have fallen 26% and I’ve lost positions in the SERP.

If you’re wondering, yes, I’m very annoyed by this.

Logically speaking it doesn’t make any sense to me and I’m still trying to understand what the problem is.  One thing that I’m going to try is to adjust the title tag of this page to see if we can increase the click-through rate, but I find it very strange that with all these positive metrics in Google Analytics, they’ve decided that my site should move further down the results page instead of up.

But I digress….

For now, the plan is to continue to have two posts created per week, as well as the occasional guest post, while I continue to revise the content on my site to make it even better.

Website 3

I have done nothing on this site for at least 12 months except add Ezoic and it continues to print money for me.  While I’m not actively working on this site, it’s a big earner for me and I want to keep it within my income reports each month.

  • Pageviews decreased MoM by 21% to 105k. You can see in my graph that historically this is nothing to panic about, and September tends to be one of the worst months every year for the site.
  • This month I earned: $2,883. Earnings decreased MoM by 20%.
  • EPM decreased MoM to $27.50

PLAN:  I’ve paused content production on this site due to budget cuts.  I looked and the recent posts weren’t bringing traffic anyway, so it doesn’t make sense to continue.

Website 5

After months of contemplating whether I should get rid of the site, I decided to officially sell It in September

Why did I sell?

  • I didn’t have time to focus on the site and know I wouldn’t focus on it in the future.
  • The site primarily makes income from display ads and Amazon. While display ads were doing well, Amazon was a huge opportunity, but I’m very hesitant to ever build a site that relies on Amazon affiliate income as I don’t trust them any longer after the numerous commission reductions over the years.
  • The question I ask myself with any site that keeps bringing in money as passively is if the site will continue to make the same revenue for the next three years if I don’t touch it. With this site, I could see a downward trend in both traffic and revenue and I have no doubt that in three years it wouldn’t make anywhere near what it does today.  That said, why hold onto it and let it die?

My goal was to get $50k for the site, but that didn’t end up happening.

Overall, I ended up selling it for $42,400, which was about a 34x multiple.  This was a little on the low side as I’d like to keep my sites in the 35-40x multiple range, but I do feel that it was fair because the monthly revenue was a rolling 12-month average and I was making a lot more 12 months ago than I did last month.

I’m excited that the site was able to sell for a good chunk of change and I’m going to use that revenue on other projects.

Website 6

I have no idea why Google wants to continually pick on this site.

As I reported in previous income reports, this site was growing very well, then it was hit by an algorithm update in June, then it began to grow again to surpass pre-algo update levels, and then it was hit again by the core algo update in September.

For those keeping track, yes I’m about to lose my mind with the site.

I just hired three writers and an editor to focus on the site and now I’m questioning what to do with the site.

One good thing to mention though.  Remember last month how I mentioned that I hired an expert to help me better track clicks on the site?

The result of tracking that content and putting a revision process in place blew me away.

In September I increased affiliate clicks on the site MoM by 27% and increased affiliate revenue generated by a whopping 309%!

  • This month I earned: $873. Earnings increased MoM by 8%
  • EPM increased MoM to $89
  • How Much Have I Invested in This Website: $16,636 ($3,400 Content budget each month)
  • How Much Money Has This Website Made? $10,960
  • Total ROI: -$5,676 (If I were to sell the website today, I imagine I could get $29,000 for it which would bring my net gain to roughly $26,000.)
  • How Much Content is on the Website? 343 informational blog posts (added 52 this month)

PLAN:  As of now, I’m not going to change anything with the site yet.  While I don’t appreciate the volatility that Google is creating, it already got hit by one algorithm update and bounced back pretty quickly.  My hope is that this recent core algorithm update will have the same result and hopefully this weird yo-yo trend Google is creating won’t continue on for eternity.

Another concerning thing about this site is that my display ad EPM is under $10, which is the worst I think I’ve ever seen.  What’s really strange is the fact that I’m able to see this by category and previously it was earning a consistent $25+ EPM.  Knowing this, I must make the assumption that this niche was hit really hard but add revenue reductions and it’ll bounce back in Q4.

At least, that’s my hope.

I’m going to continue to create content at the current pace until the end of the year.  If I’m able to add 50+ articles per month to the site for three months and don’t see a positive traffic trend, then I feel comfortable pulling the plug and letting the site sit for a little while.

I’m very hesitant to do that on the site because this is a niche where I can not only create better content than competitors, but it’s also one that allows me to get into e-commerce products.  For those that have followed me for a while, you know this is something that I’ve always wanted to do and this site is a great opportunity for that.

Only time will tell where this project ends up, but I’m going to remain cautiously positive about the possibilities because I know that the site can be a huge business if Google will get the hell out of the way.

Website 7

This site, like nearly every other site I own, seems to have been negatively impacted by the core update in September.  While it wasn’t a huge drop, it’s still annoying and I’m beginning to wonder benefitted from these recent algo updates because most of the folks I see in communities are up in arms and frustrated at the moment.

I also hired a website speed expert this month to try to increase core vitals and load times on this site.  He’s already improved it and is working on other optimizations, but I’m hoping that this will positively impact the traffic to the site in the future.

  • Pageviews decreased MoM by 13% at 104k
  • This month I earned: $4,738. Earnings decreased MoM by 14%.
  • EPM increased MoM to $54
  • How Much Have I Invested in This Website: $53,160 ($1,000 Content budget each month)
  • How Much Money Has This Website Made? $110,214
  • Total ROI: $57,054 (If I were to sell the website today, I can assume I’d sell for an estimated $200,000. Which means a net gain of about $257,000)
  • How Much Content is on the Website: Keep in mind that this is an informational type of website, not affiliate related at all.
    • 1984 informational pages on the website
    • 182 Informational Blog Posts

PLAN: It sucked to have to reduce the budget on the site, but after analyzing all the content that we’ve been creating, I noticed a troubling trend that traffic has only been declining.

I think the content is good enough and don’t attribute this to poorly written articles.

Luckily, the site continues to get organic links and my hope is that over time as those continue to increase the authority of the site, Google will begin to reward it and increase the traffic numbers, which will also increase revenue.  For now, I’m going to stick with a budget of $1000 per month for the content of this site and keep an eye on the performance over the next couple months.

Website 8

This site continues to be a small part of my portfolio but I do intend on hiring a writer in the near future for it.  I don’t think it’s going to be a significant amount of content, maybe even a budget as low as $500 per month, but I want to continue with the site as I think there is a decent opportunity here.

  • Pageviews decreased MoM by 18% to 9k.
  • This month I earned: $166. Earnings remained flat MoM.
  • EPM increased MoM to $91
  • How Much Have I Invested in This Website: $10,164 (No content production at the moment)
  • How Much Money Has This Website Made? $2,988
  • Total ROI: -$7,176(If I were to sell the website today, I can assume I’d sell for an estimated $5k. Which means a net loss of about $2,100)
  • How Much Content is on the Website? Keep in mind this website is mostly focused on affiliate content with some informational content.
    • 319 Informational Blog Posts

PLAN:  I mentioned last month how my mom said that she wanted to start writing for the site.  Well, she quit before she could even get started, lol.  For whatever reason she thinks it’s impossible to use a computer and decided that this was just too difficult to do, so now I’m going to reach out to my list of writers to find somebody to fill in for her.

This site is currently my last priority though as I’ve finally figured out what to do with website 10 and want to focus on that now.

Website 10

EUREKA!

It took me a while to decide, but I finally figured out what to do with the site.  While I’d love to explain all the juicy details here, I know it will result in a copious number of copycats and I’m unwilling to do that.  But I found a way to steer this website into an angle that has very high commissions ($100+/conversion) and very high display ad rates.

The problem?

I still don’t have a team in place to start producing content….but I’m getting there.

  • Pageviews increased MoM by 22% to 6k.
  • This month I earned: $0. This site is not yet monetized.
  • EPM remained at $0.
  • How Much Content is on the Website?
    • 21 Informational Blog Posts (Note: This is LESS than last month. Why?  I deleted/consolidated articles on the site so I can tighten the focus around my new plan)

PLAN:  Being that Google continues to penalize then reward site 6, I decided it’s better now than ever to begin diversifying my portfolio.  My first plan of action is to get a team in place for this site to increase the amount of content.

I’m excited about the site because I already have a decent DR in the 50+ range and it’s been on an upward trend of traffic for the last three months.  While I don’t know if I’ll be dedicating as much budget here as I have to website 6, it’s a nice backup plan in case website 6 doesn’t work out.

As of now, I’m testing five different writers for the site and plan on hiring two who will create 1-2 posts per week until further notice.  I haven’t yet figured out word counts and what the budget will be, but I’ll get back to you guys and that in the next month’s income report.

The nice thing about this opportunity is that I’ve already got a very clear content production process in Trello for my other sites that I’m going to roll into the site.

I already have a quality editor, a detailed content production procedure, and VA’s to help post the content.  The only thing I need is competent writers who can produce quality information that we can post and my test writers seem to be pretty good.

OneHourProfessor YouTube Channel

The OneHourProfessor YouTube channel remains and is still bringing in revenue without my intervention.

  • Views decreased MoM by 6% to 6k
  • This month I earned: $333. Earnings increased MoM by 14%.
  • Subscriber growth decreased MoM by 14%
  • How Much Have I Invested in This YouTube Channel: $3,927
  • How Much Money Has This YouTube Channel Made? $16,371
  • Total ROI: $12,444 (If I were to sell the channel today, I can assume I’d sell for an estimated $10k. Which means a net gain of about $22k)

PLAN: At this point, I must stay away from publishing new content on my channel.  My sites take a ton of my mental capacity and history has shown I’m more skilled in this area.

What Do You Think?

Out of sheer curiosity, I must ask if anyone else is feeling beat up by Google as of late.

I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but things have been very unpredictable in the last couple of months.

I’d even say that since I started my online business in 2014, I haven’t had things go as haywire as they have in the last month and I’m wondering if this is just in my little corner of the Internet, or if everybody else is feeling the same.

Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to hear from you guys and reply to every comment.

  • I totally agree, Ron. This year has been rough for my site as well. I doubled my publishing output saw a ~20% decrease in traffic, and now it’s slowly recovering again. I’m working on site speed, updating old posts, doing whatever I can to recover, but it doesn’t seem to be speeding things up 😑

  • more question than comment. I tried to enroll in your Ignition course 7 times and each time nothing happened . Is it because of Google?
