October is over, and it was a bit of a soul-searching month.

As with many of you readers, Google has been highly volatile as of late, and my portfolio of sites has seen significant traffic fluctuations weekly.

I find this very annoying as one of my favorite things about blogs is that they are (typically) steady over a period of time.

But, for whatever reason, the folks at Google have decided to change too many things far too quickly and it’s resulted in annoying fluctuations that aren’t a typical characteristic of blogs since I started in 2014.

But it is what it is.  There’s very little that I can do personally to fix this other than shield myself from the damage that they can cause.

So, to do this I’m going to be going back to my roots and rolling out new sites.

I launched three new sites in October that I think have potential.  While I’m not sure if any of them can get to my goal of $100,000/month, I could see them making $10,000+/month and one of them could go very far beyond that if executed properly.

Now that I’ve made my processes better with Trello, I think I can do things at better scale than previously.

Beyond that, I’m heavily increasing my investment in my business.

I’m doing this because my wife and I have a good amount of money in savings, in my business account,  and the stock market has been an absolute joke. So, I think it makes sense to invest my money into growing businesses which is probably the best ROI I can get.

To be honest, this vein of thought came when I was recently listening to an interview from none other than one of the most popular YouTubers in the world, Mr. Beast.  In the interview, the host asked Mr. Beast if he invested his money into the stock market and other things.

His reply made me think….

He explained that instead of investing in companies that he has no control over and stocks that he knows very little about, he’s decided to take the majority of his money and put it right back into his business.

Now, this seems risky, especially with all the uncertainty with Google as of late, but it’s very true that the majority of my money that I’ve made throughout my career has been from my own business.  If it’s not collecting a check each month for affiliate revenue or display ads, it’s selling a site for a 35-40x monthly profit multiple and collecting a large amount of money at one time.

So, I’ve decided to go this route.

Moving forward, my goal is to invest around $10,000/mo in content across my portfolio.  Not only will this help grow current and new sites, but it will also allow me to report less income in 2023 and reduce my tax liability.

This month my total income after expenses was $5,279 which comes out to $170 in profit per day.

I should mention before we begin, if you’re looking to start your own blog, make sure you check out my free IGNITION course today.

Personal Life Update

October was an interesting month as I finally took the time to attend a few different events thrown by folks in the industry.

The first was a simple meet-up by the folks at Flippa.com

It was at the Venetian in Las Vegas and was a few hours of networking while drinking and eating on their dime.  One little surprise here was that they asked me to give a quick speech in which I talked about my experience with Flippa.

For those that don’t know, I prefer to sell my websites through them because they have lower fees and have always taken care of me.  I wasn’t too nervous of the speech I had to give as there were around 80 people in attendance, but then the CEO of Flippa explained they had a “couple thousand” online attendees as well.

Panic begins….

Truth is, I’m not much of a public speaker as I just don’t’ do it often enough and while I think I did okay, and only had to speak for like 5 minutes, it was still a bit nerve-racking.

At the event they explained how they’re starting Flippa Invest.

This is a great way for site owners to raise money in exchange for equity, or for investors to invest in growing sites.

A week after this event I attended a conference with the folks at Ezoic.com.

This was the highlight of the month as I was able to connect with people that I hadn’t ever actually spoken with in person, but have known for years.

While I’ve never been a big fan of in-person conferences, I’m now second-guessing that.  There’s something really cool about sitting in a room with dozens of people who know what you’re talking about when you discuss online businesses.

I think as we sit behind computer screens all day, we forget that, but this industry really isn’t as big as it seems and finding others to talk to about this stuff is not easy to do.  This conference was a great breath of fresh air and really help me with my current mindset as I was down considering how volatile Google has been as of late.

Spoiler alert:  If you’re seeing this volatility yourself – so is everyone else.  I talked to many folks at the conference, and most are dealing with some weird traffic fluctuations at the moment and have been hit.

Just know that you aren’t alone, even if it feels that way.

That’s all for the personal update.

If this is your first time on my website let me explain a few things about my detailed income reports each month that outlines the money I made (or lost) each month.

I’m doing this for a number of reasons:

1) I strive to be transparent about what it takes to make money online.

2) These reports help me keep track of my own progress.

3) These reports hold me accountable.

Keep in mind, I don’t create these to gloat about my earnings. I create them to help you understand the true “earning curve” of online business.

On a side note, I don’t disclose my actual website URL’s on my reports because I’ve had bad experiences with copycats in the past.

So, in my income reports, you’ll see website generalizations like Website 1, Website 3, Website 5 Website 4, etc.

If you’re looking to create your own blog/online business and want to get started quickly, I suggest you sign up for my FREE course, IGNITION, by clicking here.

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s dive into the report.

Project Updates

Udemy Update

I don’t focus on Udemy any longer, but I have made money from them every month since I stopped.

OHP Website

The OHP site did pretty well in October.  While the numbers didn’t blow me out of the water, this is quickly become my most profitable site and I think it will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

The one thing I’ve noticed is that of all my sites that have been impacted by algorithm updates, OHP stands alone.  I think that’s a good reason because it has a ton of earned links, but obviously it make sense to continue to build where you’re seeing success and this is the most successful site for me at the moment.

  • Pageviews increased MoM by 9% to 61k
  • This month I earned: $12,228. Earnings increased MoM by 44%.
  • EPM increased MoM to $31

PLAN:  It’s quite funny how a month can change perceptions in the world of online business.

Last month I was discussing how I planned on reducing the content output on the OHP site because Google’s updates had been slowing traffic, and this month I’m thinking the exact opposite.

Again, I did some soul-searching in October and realize that I need to double down on sites that are already working.

OHP is one of those sites, and I need to double down on it.

However, I found that having one writer create most of my content wasn’t really the best move.  This is because while this writer is excellent, they charge $0.09/word.  For certain posts this totally makes sense, but for other, more informational-focused content, I needed to find a more affordable solution.

So, I took one of my writers off another project and placed them on the OHP site to help produce more content moving forward.  I’ll still be the editor of the site and approve anything that gets published, but this is a great way to save myself time while also sharing the knowledge that I have within my content.

I have done nothing on this site for at least 12 months except add Ezoic and it continues to print money for me.  While I’m not actively working on this site, it’s a big earner for me and I want to keep it within my income reports each month.

I did notice however that it seems this site may have been hit by one of the algorithm updates as of late.  The only thing I can do is compare year-over-year and when doing this, the traffic is roughly half of what it was last year.  So, we’ll see how that shakes out but it definitely seems like there’s a reduction in traffic here as well.

  • Pageviews decreased MoM by 22% to 82
  • This month I earned: $2,055. Earnings decreased MoM by 29%.
  • EPM decreased MoM to $09

PLAN:  I’ve paused content production on this site and am letting it sit.  My hope is that Google rolls back some of their recent updates over the coming months to bring this site and others like it, which are totally white hat and have decent content, back to the visitor threshold that they deserve.

Website 6

This site is still the biggest problem child in my portfolio.

A few months ago, I was talking about how I was going to go all out on the site and I set up the infrastructure to do so.  Unfortunately, Google has been absolutely unpredictable with the site and I don’t know what to do.

I have big dreams for the site as I really want to create an e-commerce brand on top of it, but the fact that Google continually increases and then decreases traffic so sharply I don’t think it’s the best investment at the moment.  So, again, I had to dial back investment and I’m going to sit back and watch how the site does before I make any moves.

  • This month I earned: $405. Earnings decreased MoM by 54%
  • EPM decreased MoM to $99
  • How Much Have I Invested in This Website: $20,036 ($500/mo budget)
  • How Much Money Has This Website Made? $11,365
  • Total ROI: -$8,671 (If I were to sell the website today, I imagine I could get $14,175 for it which would bring my net gain to roughly $5,504.)
  • How Much Content is on the Website? 363 informational blog posts

PLAN:  At this point, this site is going to have a $500 content budget every month until I see things stabilize.  This is a HUGE step down from the $3,600 I had previously, but I think it’s the smartest thing I can do for my business now.

Unfortunately, I’m still only making around $6/day from display ads with this site which is MUCH lower than I anticipated.  There’s still a chance that Google gives love to the site and with future updates, traffic will begin to increase again, but for right now I have to relocate the budget to other projects.

My hope is that this site will get to break even each month and I can continue to invest $500/mo without feeling much.  Of course, I’d welcome if the site could increase traffic significantly as well as earnings, but so far Google has held it back.

Website 7

I don’t know exactly what’s happened to this site as it continues to drop in traffic and earnings.  It really doesn’t make much sense to me because for such a long time it was on an upward trajectory but now Google has decided they don’t like the site anymore.

Looking at my content strategy, I really haven’t changed much and continued to stay on target with my content production to create niche-related pieces that I thought were an organic fit for the brand.

But for whatever reason, Google feels otherwise.

At this point, I just throw up my hands in disbelief and shake my head while I hope the folks at Google will figure this out.

My website speed expert identified some issues with the site and while we haven’t gotten them live yet, I’m hopeful that this will help rank the site better than what it currently is.

  • Pageviews decreased MoM by 22% at 82k
  • This month I earned: $3,495. Earnings decreased MoM by 26%.
  • EPM decreased MoM to $86
  • How Much Have I Invested in This Website: $54,160 ($0/mo budget)
  • How Much Money Has This Website Made? $113,709
  • Total ROI: $59,549 (If I were to sell the website today, I can assume I’d sell for an estimated $122,000. Which means a net gain of about $181,550)
  • How Much Content is on the Website: Keep in mind that this is an informational type of website, not affiliate related at all.
    • 2,015 informational pages on the website
    • 184 Informational Blog Posts

PLAN: While I could continue with my estimated budget from a month ago of $1000/mo, I decided to pull it all back and stop.

Basically, I’m throwing a temper tantrum and I’m really frustrated at how the site is playing out.

I looked at my main competitor and for some reason, they have seen an increase in traffic while I have seen a decrease.  I just don’t think it’s right and I’m not going to continue to invest in something until I see positive momentum again.

Website 8

Interestingly, this site did well in October.  In fact, looking at the numbers it was the second-best month the site has ever had and while I still think it could be very large, it seems that a slow and steady approach is what will win here.

  • Pageviews decreased MoM by 8% to 6k.
  • This month I earned: $244. Earnings increased MoM by 47%
  • EPM increased MoM to $49
  • How Much Have I Invested in This Website: $11,164 ($1,000/mo budget)
  • How Much Money Has This Website Made? $3,232
  • Total ROI: -$7,932(If I were to sell the website today, I can assume I’d sell for an estimated $8.5k. Which means a net gain of about $560)
  • How Much Content is on the Website? Keep in mind this website is mostly focused on affiliate content with some informational content.
    • 329 Informational Blog Posts

PLAN:  As of now, I’ve got a new writer on the site and want to produce around $1000/mo in content until further notice.  Much of this is because this site has seemed to dodge all Google algorithm updates and while I don’t know if that will continue, I want to play into that strength.

This is one of the sites that could literally have thousands of posts and I’m hopeful that as I continue to invest here the earnings will rise.  Obviously, you never know until you go through the process, but I’m optimistic.

Website 10

This site is very much underwhelming now, but I’m excited about it.  I mentioned last month how I thought that I had an idea for the site and how I could take it forward and now I’ve begun to implement that idea.

In the month of October, I was able to hire a team to help me with this site and I think that some good things can happen here.  Like other sites that I’m currently investing in, this one has dodged algorithm updates and it’s something that I think makes sense to focus on in the future.

  • Pageviews decreased MoM by 26% to 9k. (I’m not alarmed by this as the site has traffic dictated by a few pages.)
  • This month I earned: $0. This site is not yet monetized.
  • EPM remained at $0.
  • How Much Have I Invested in This Website: $400 ($2,200/mo budget)
  • How Much Money Has This Website Made? $0
  • Total ROI: -$400
  • How Much Content is on the Website: Keep in mind that this is an informational type of website, not affiliate related at all.

Website 11 *NEW*

This is a new site I’ll be starting in November.  This particular site is a smaller niche that I think I could build and easily monopolize on the SERP.  I don’t anticipate this site ever being a huge earner, but I could see it bringing in $2,000+ each month primarily based entirely on display ads and something that I could sell off eventually.

As of now, I have a writer for the site and they’re working on producing content.

The goal is to get around 14-16 articles published each month for the next 6 months to see how the site does.

  • This month I earned: $0. This site is not yet monetized.
  • EPM remained at $0.

Website 12 *NEW*

This is another new site I’ll be starting in November.

I think the market for this site is definitely bigger than website 11, but it’s still pretty niche.  While I don’t know exactly where this could end up, I think somewhere around $5,000/mo isn’t out of the question.  This site is also based primarily off of display ads, but there could be more of an affiliate angle here as well.

I have my writer in place and they’ve already begun producing content.  As of now, we haven’t seen any traffic, but I do think that will be coming within six months as this is a very focused site.

The goal is to get around 14-16 articles published each month for the next 6 months as well to see what happens.

Website 13 *NEW*

This is the last site I’ll be starting in November.

Of the sites that I’m starting, this one has the potential to be the largest.  There is a significant amount of work to be done and a ton of content to create, but it’s a niche that I’m experienced in, and think I found an underserved industry.

This is one of those that could hit $10,000+/mo if executed properly.

I have my writer in place but haven’t yet had them produce anything.  Right now I have to focus on keyword research for the site and once I’ve done that, will be able to move forward.

I haven’t yet set a content goal for the site as it’s so new, but the budget will be the standard $500/mo.

OneHourProfessor YouTube Channel

The OneHourProfessor YouTube channel continues to plug along, but I’m REALLY itching to get back into it.  I posted a few things to my YouTube channel and people seemed receptive, so I may be testing the waters soon.

  • Views decreased MoM by 6% to 8k
  • This month I earned: $264. Earnings decreased MoM by 21%.
  • Subscriber growth increased MoM by 2%
  • How Much Have I Invested in This YouTube Channel: $3,927
  • How Much Money Has This YouTube Channel Made? $16,635
  • Total ROI: $12,708 (If I were to sell the channel today, I can assume I’d sell for an estimated $10k. Which means a net gain of about $23k)

PLAN: I may come back soon with poorly edited content, but I’m on the fence about it.  As you can see based on this report, I have a bunch of things going on with the new sites.

My biggest problem with YouTube is that the ROI was never there and in order to make it worth the time, I’d have to create more courses.  Which I can do….but I need more time to do so.

What Do You Think?

Should I go back to YouTube?

If I get enough interest I’ll find a way, but I need reassurance that you folks actually want to see my face again.

Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to hear from you guys and reply to every comment.

  • I found you through YouTube. Would be nice to see you back. You should think about doing a q&a on Reddit on the r/entrepreneur sub.

    • Thanks Dustin! I may make a resurgence soon, just have to make sure I can monetize it all better to make it worth the time. As of now, the blog is so much more profitable. Oh, and I’m not big on Reddit and would feel weird jumping in. Maybe one day though.

  • I look forward to reading your monthly reports and they are motivating me to give it a go as well. Quick question…. you list $1074 a month in insurance expenses. What kind of insurance does this refer to?

  • Ron,
I also originally found you through YouTube, and signed up for your ignition course last year. I’m completely stuck because I have no idea what to blog about. I’m not an expert in anything, and I have no idea how any blog I would write could actually make money. However, I did appreciate your course and advice even though I haven’t made any moves by creating a blog yet. I know you don’t tell anyone which blogs are yours, but I am curious how anyone is making or going to make money as the economy tanks.

    • Ahoy Tracy! Happy to hear from you.

You have an expertise. You may not realize it, but you do. I think maybe looking again at niche selection would be a good move. For what it’s worth, you don’t need to KNOW everything about a niche, you need to be interested in it and motivated to learn.

I don’t mind divulging my sold sites. Here’s one: CatKingpin.com It was making around $1000/mo for years, sold for $42k a few months back. Even as the economy tanks, advertisers still pay for ad space and people still need to buy products. Earnings will likely dip a bit, but these online businesses don’t just vanish when the economy goes to poop.
